This is a program that serves as an introduction to a career in the ancillary and support service for health care. A student can use his or her newly-found skills to land a job in healthcare facilities like assisted living programs, hospitals, and even the commercial food industry or choose to accept private clients.

The program tackles food temperature, kitchen safety and sanitation, diet orders, foodborne diseases, food handling safety and customer service skills. The program takes four weeks to complete and classes are held 4 times a week. It’s composed of 36 hours for lectures, 36 hours of laboratory time and 24 hours of on-site training at a healthcare facility. Every class is 6 hours long and provides students with the knowledge they need for a career in this particular sub-specialty of health care.

    I find the roles of the dietary aide to be quite diverse because these include meal planning and preparation, meal delivery, and general custodial duties. The ideal dietary aide is very detail-oriented, organized, self-motivated, and has interest and experience with food preparation, nutrition and health. One thing is apparent: Dietary aides must be people-oriented, as they generally deliver food to various populations in a variety of settings, including hospitals, nursing homes, retirement communities, assisted-living facilities, daycares, schools, and home health settings.

    I happen to know that assisted living facilities offer different levels of assistance and a wide variety of programs and services to people of all ages. Many assisted-living facilities employ a dietary aide, whose main job is to offer nutrition assistance to the residents of the facility. I know this because my mother’s HMO offers a bus ride to the local senior center, where they provide a myriad of activities designed to keep seniors healthy and happy.

    I realize that there are sub-specialty job categories. I just didn’t know much about dietary aides. I knew about the Social Services department, which is staffed with concerned and dedicated professionals, who help residents adjust to becoming members of their new community. They work with residents on a one-to-one basis and serve as a liaison between staff and families. They are here to answer questions and offer support and guidance. I would rather train to get a job in one of these kinds of jobs.

    Of all the medical field jobs that don’t require a very long training period (such as certified nurses), I see a growing demand for dietary aides, especially since many HMO’s are now practicing preventative health care. As a result, many health insurance plans now include the delivery of healthy meals. Dietary aides promote nutrition as a means to support health and wellness, such as through creating menus and preparing food. This is why I see the demand for this type of training growing steadily.

    Dietary assistants also go by the titles dietary aide and dietary technician. I hear you need an associate’s degree in nutrition, or a related field as a requirement to secure employment in this field. A dietary assistant’s primary job is to prepare meals and educate clients on nutrition, while under the supervision of a licensed dietitian. I think this is a rewarding position and a good entry level position for someone who wants to be mentored by a licensed nutritionist. It’s a good way into the industry.
