Types of Healthcare Professionals

Since the field of medicine is quite extensive, different types of specialized services are provided by specific healthcare professionals.

Below is information on the various groups into which healthcare providers are organized. The categories include nursing care, primary care, specialty care, and drug therapy.

Primary Care Professionals

This category includes physicians who ascertain the nature of your illness during your initial medical check-up. The group includes:

Nurse practitioners – these professionals have completed training at the graduate level in the specific areas of family medicine, pediatrics, geriatrics and adult care.

General Doctors or Generalists – these are medical doctors who possess specialized training in the areas of family medicine, pediatrics or internal medicine, and are assisted by physician assistants.

OB/GYNs – these doctors specialize in the areas of obstetrics and gynecology.

Nursing Care Professionals

This group includes:

Licensed practical nurses – these are licensed caregivers trained in the handling of various conditions.

Registered nurses – these are nurses who have graduated and successfully passed the state board exam, so are therefore licensed to practice in the relevant state.

Advanced practice nurses – these professionals are more experienced and have completed further education, in comparison to registered nurses. They possess the required skills and training in areas such as anesthesia, cardiac and psychiatric health, community health, and prenatal care.

Drug Therapy Professionals

These healthcare professionals have graduated from a college with specialization in the area of pharmacy. They are, therefore, qualified to dispense medication, according to prescriptions prepared by a primary healthcare provider.

A pharmacist will provide information about the available medications and dispense the drug prescribed for your need. You will be advised of the required dosage and interactions of the drug, as well as if there are any possible side effects as a result of usage.

Specialty Care Professionals

With specialized knowledge in several fields such as allergy, hematology, dermatology and nephrology, these professionals should be consulted if you are experiencing problems with any area of your body, to ensure you receive specialized diagnosis and care.

I must say I am thankful for the graduate training of the nurse practitioner that allows them to provide nearly the same care as an MD. Since Obamacare went into effect the majority of the doctors in my area have quit their jobs, and were it not for Nurse practitioners most people would not be able to find a PCP.
